Lea Aymard: Komunin mrk
The science-fiction story Komunin mrk by Lea Aymard is the first prose work published in Slovene written by a trans woman. The story’s protagonist, Alja Mehak, is also a trans woman living in the futuristic world of Komuna, a ruling heteronormative structure of complete control. Although protected by a modified Hakiz chip, Alja remains vulnerable, as ever since her transition she has been classified among the dissidents for whom there is no place in Komuna. Through the construction of this futuristic world and her cinematically inventive dialogues, Lea Aymard immerses us in a story that records numerous emotions, comparable to experiences of trans people in today’s reality.

Excerpt from the book
Alja had always been part of the system, so she did not know fear of it. In this system, she was at home.
Or rather, she had been. The Multiscan closes the loop. “Identification in progress. Please state your name.”
“Alja.”
Alja would soon automatically say Aljaž.
Aljaž is her birth name. In fact, people had called Alja Aljaž her entire life until now. Aljaž belonged to the dominant financial class and had everything any guy could wish for. The problem: Alja was simply… Alja. She hadn’t realized it for a long time, but Alja had been Alja for as long as she could remember.
But today, Alja is officially Alja for the first time.
