The TRANSformacije Collection

Mala Kline: Gledališča potencialnosti. Med etiko in politiko

19 EUR

“The understanding of theatre in Mala Kline’s book is far from understanding theatre as a grand gesture, a loud political statement, theatre as a roaring, ground-breaking event that marked the theatre history of the 20 th century. When we speak of political theatre, wee usually speak of a theatre that is loud and addresses, while the book presents the political gestures of theatre mostly in minor key. They are micro-political practices, a series of coincidences and temporal intensities that we must always see, practice, and think in their singularity.”
-Bojana Kunst, excerpt from the Preface

“If the place of political occupation and resistance where contemporary theatres work is the relationship of a subject with their own potentiality, with the immanent life they represent, with the inhuman capability they represent, then we can understand the “moment of the political” as an interruption that happens in the ‘time-now’ – in the ‘immanent time of minimal difference’, the time between the subject’s being and their potential. Each contemporary theatre work that uses profane forms of the common turns our mental and cognitive habits, opens a temporality of a possible ‘new beginning’”.

About the Author

Mala Kline holds a BA in philosophy and comparative literature, an MA in theatre (DasArts, Amsterdam) and a Phd in philosophy (Faculty of Arts, Ljubljana). In Slovenia and internationally, she is among the rare writers of the (younger) generation to connect dance and choreographic practice with an in-depth theoretical reflection that artfully slides both in the theatre codes as well as in the philosophical conceptual framework. Gledališča potencialnosti: med etiko in politiko (Theatres of the Possible: Between Ethics and Politics) is her PhD thesis reworked; she finished it in 2016 under the mentorship of Dr Eve D. Bahovec at the Faculty of Arts, Ljubljana. It is her first lengthier book in which she steps to an almost visionary level to continue her branched path as an author that began almost twenty years ago. Her original projects, Campo de’Fiori (2004), Debut (2006), Bliss (2010), Eden (2012), Genesis (2015) and the Song trilogy (2017–2019), to mention only the most prominent ones, received numerous Slovenian and international awards. Her performative and theoretical oeuvre takes a distinctly multi-genre research approach. In the last decade, her methodology focuses on researching the phenomenon of collective dreams following the Saphire® method, based on which she develops an independent compositional and performative practice founded in affective and transformational power of image. She develops it through different institutional, productional, and educational contexts. Maja Kline is currently active as a self- employed person in culture and an independent researcher in philosophy and art.

Reception in Public

Mala Kline: Umetniške strategije so lahko tudi počasnost, trajanje, spanje, sanjanje
MMC RTV SLO  / 28. 8. 2020
“Art played an emancipatory role. An artist was considered a creative, autonomous, innovative, independent subject who could be an alternative. Capitalism as a system appropriated that. We became pseudo-autonomous, auto-poetical producers of self. Art doesn’t have the role that it used to have until the 1970s when a turn form Fordism into post- Fordism happened.”

Mala Kline: Gledališča potencialnosti: med etiko in politiko. “Gledališče je vedno materializirana misel.”
