Gestures of Resistance
This year’s thematic block, which Martina Ruhsam has been carefully planning for almost a year, focuses on theatrical and artistic strategies of resistance to the existing neoliberal economic and, consequently, political paradigms that have recently cut sharply into all areas of our social fabric. It addresses the vast corpus of questions and problems that this raises through a variety of approaches – theoretical contributions, case studies, manifestos and even real artistic interventions, which give this double issue of Maska a distinctive performative note.
Our diverse critical reflections are published at the right time; at a time when the current economic and political crisis in our country seems to be at its peak, at a time of numerous protests, called nationwide uprisings, which give us confidence that changes in the ruling economic-political paradigms are possible. This is one of the reasons for the decision to publish two articles alongside the thematic pages of the Gesture of Resistance, which complement them in terms of content: the first describes the chronology of events that were unbelievably triggered by the premiere of the youth performance The Golden Charm, and supplements it with the opinions of experts in various fields of education and the arts; the second addresses the question of the conditions for political theatre today.
Instead of an obituary for his dear friend and colleague Maks Soršak, Sebastijan Horvat sought out his script for a theatre project that was unfortunately never realised; to excerpts from Maks’ script, Sebastijan added his own thoughts and memories. With their publication, Maks’s project is finally going out into the world.
