Go East!
With the issues Conversations with Directors, which is dated 1997, although it was published in spring 1998, and Go East!, Maska entered a transitional period. Go East! was edited by Rok Vevar and a new editorial board was formed (Emil Hrvatin, Primož Jesenko, Jedrt Jež, Bojana Kunst, Blaž Lukan, Gašper Malej and Aldo Milohnić), which was active in a refined form from 1999 to 2004.
The year 1998 marks a kind of sobering period for Slovenian non-institutional theatre production, which may have been the time when it finally realised that the 1980s had passed and that contemporary theatre creativity was taking place in a changed situation. This is the subject of an article by Eda Čufer, who presented it at a round table discussion of the same name in the context of a new festival, Young Lions, which was organised by the Bunker Institute in August 1998 and which had its baptism at various venues around Ljubljana. The main thematic block Go East! features articles by Marvin Carlson The Rumours of the Modern International Stage, Aldo Milohnić Asia in Europe, Bojana Kunst The American Model in Poland, Jedrt jež Go East!, a conversation between Edda Čufer and the Estonian producer Pitt Raud, and a reflection by Blaž Lukan on the topic Why is there still no theatre festival in Slovenia? and an article by Barbara Orel From the Theatre of Objects to the Theatre of Images. Emil Hrvatin writes about the exhibition Body and The East and Out Of Actions, and Marin Blažević reflects on What the 12th Eurokaz showed. An interview with Blaž Lukan, entitled “Writing is a question of courage”, was conducted by Rok Vevar and Gašper Malej. Finally, Maska presents translated and selected notes by the German painter Gerhard Richter and the theme Challenges of the New Theatre: challenges of a new theory (Emil Hrvatin, Maja Breznik, Denis Poniž, Aldo Milohnić, Bojana Kunst, Lado Kralj).
