Maska – Stayin’ Alive
Maska, a performing arts magazine, was first published in 1920. In 2020 we will publish our 200th issue in three volumes.
The exhibition presents the diverse activities of Maska, which have expanded from the initial publication of the magazine to include book publishing, artistic production and education. The posters on display commemorate the rich design history of Maska, with the participation of some of the most brilliant artists (France Kralj, Matjaž Vipotnik, Irena Woelle, Samo Lapajne, Martin Bricelj, Martin Mistrik, Miha Turšič, Ajdin Bašić) who have worked on its visual identity. The exhibition was designed by Toni Soprano Meneglejte and the posters were designed by Niki Lapkovski.
The exhibition Mask – Stayin’ Alive at GT22 will be open until 8 June 2022.

The exhibition at the Borštnik Festival presents the diverse activities of Maska, which has expanded from the initial publication of a magazine to include book publishing, artistic production and education. Maska’s distinctive feature is also its rich design history, which has produced a number of names (France Kralj, Matjaž Vipotnik, Irena Woelle, Samo Lapajne, Martin Bricelj, Martin Mistrik, Miha Turšič, Ajdin Bašić) important for the wider design landscape.
This year, in collaboration with our mentor Boštjan Botas Kenda and students of the MA in Graphic Design at ALUO, we have redesigned the visual identity of the Masque. The first of the three 200 issues was designed by Nika Lapkovski and Nina Ninković.
We will present two art projects produced by Maska. Mateja Bučar will be a guest artist at UGM with her performance Parquet Ball, which was initiated by Maska magazine. For the 100th issue, we asked the artists featured in Maska to imagine the projects they will carry out for the 200th issue, planned for 2023. Part of the exhibition will be a performance of Simona Semenič’s text Jerebika, strudel, dance and more, where film and meta-theatre language become the basis for a kind of ambient film installation. The text is performed as a (silent) film with subtitles. Maska’s artistic practice, in its long history, testifies to the fact that the focus of its interest has always been on questioning production formats and stretching the idea of theatre.
Toni Soprano Meneglejte will design the exhibition, which will include different levels of materiality – physical, graphic, digital.
Throughout the exhibition, a large selection of Maska’s publications will be available at a 10% discount at the Maribor City Bookstore (Ulica 10. října 4).
