In 2020, Maska, a professional journal for performance art, celebrates two grand events: the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first edition, and the 200th number of the journal. This is why we are having a celebratory year! We will publish three double 200th numbers: 200aa, 200bb, and 200cc. With this gesture, we wish to symbolically slow down the time that runs too fast in the modus of projective temporality of our lives.

Design History of Maska

The exhibition during the Maribor Theatre Festival presents the varied activities of the Maska Institute that have expanded from the initial journal publication to book publishing, artistic production, and education. Maska is also special because of its rich design history that features many names (France Kralj, Matjaž Vipotnik, Irena Woelle, Samo Lapajne, Martin Bricelj, Martin Mistrik, Miha Turšič, Ajdin Bašić) important in the wider design landscape.

This year we collaborated with mentor Boštjan Botas Kenda and the students at the master’s programme of graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design to reinvent Maska’s visual image. The first of the three numbers 200 was designed by Nika Lapkovski and Nina Ninković.

We will present two artistic projects produced by Maska. UGM will host Mateja Bučar with her performance Parquet Ball, which was created upon Maska’s initiative. When the 100th edition was published, we asked the artists covered in Maska to conceptualize projects to be realized when the 200th edition was to come out (initially planned for 2023). A part of the exhibition will also be a staging of Simona Semenič’s text rown, strudel, dance, and then some, in which film and meta-theatre speech become the basis for a type of Ambiental film setting. The text is performed as a (silent) movie with subtitles. The long history of Maska’s artistic practice testifies to the fact that in the centre of its interest there is always the questioning of production formats and extending the reflection on theatre.

The exhibition, which will include various levels of materiality – physical, graphical, digital – will be designed by Toni Soprano Meneglejte.

For the entire duration of the exhibition, a large selection of Maska’s publication will be available with a 10 % discount at the Mestna knjigarna Maribor (Ulica 10. oktobra 4).
