The Cadastre of Transient Spaces: Our Thing III
The essence of public cultural infrastructure lies in its inalienable, permanent public ownership – accessible to the broadest possible community of creators. Yet, the differences between those who have access to space and those who do not remain (far) too great. As a community, we are therefore obliged to consider various systemic solutions that could help reduce these disparities.
Through a series of assemblies organized by Maska Institute, Nomad Dance Academy Slovenia, and Kino Šiška, we reflect on forms of governance and modes of operation that emerge in the processes of community formation and spatial management. We consider the boundaries between the private and the public, governmental and non-governmental, institutional and non-institutional, while mapping the spatial dynamics that shape these relations.
At the third assembly, we will discuss the opportunities – and, inevitably, the challenges – of establishing a registry and system for sharing available spatial capacities that would connect public institutions and non-governmental organizations, enabling fair, transparent, and efficient access to shared spaces. The idealistic premise is that such a system could create conditions in which public spaces occasionally serve (almost) everyone and contribute to raising the quality of artistic production.
Together with invited speakers and the interested public, we will present a possible model for the use of public infrastructure, focusing on the various questions, concerns, and challenges that arise in developing a new model of cooperation. There are countless questions – yet we hope that the diversity of perspectives will lead us toward shared answers.
