Peekaboo Pointe is an interdisciplinary performance artist, video artist, stripper, burlesque performer and choreographer. Peekaboo has created a body of work that can co-exist in both traditional performance spaces and the world of nightlife entertainment. In addition to being a proud stripper and headlining in burlesque in nightclubs and festivals around the world, she creates interdisciplinary multimedia dance theater that has been shown in various theaters and festivals. Her work explores intimacy by subverting the expectations of the viewer and using her body as a tool to explore larger topics of gender, sexuality, sex work, and feminism with playful humor sprinkled in.

In her essay Uses of the Erotic: Erotic as Power, Audre Lorde argues that the erotic is the primary, empowering, creative and life-giving feminist force. Empowerment, however, is a threat to the order of things, and women have been forced to detach the erotic from every corner of their lives, except their private sexuality. In today’s world, where the rules set by men throughout history still apply, we have learned that sexuality must be repressed, not trusted and not expressed in public. To be erotic, to be sexual, has always meant to be non-feminist and submissive at the same time. Yet it can also be the other way around. We will talk to Peekaboo Pointe, director, performer, choreographer, visual artist, burlesque dancer, former
stripper and former sex worker from New York, about the feminist perspective on pleasure. Can burlesque, stripping, sex work be emancipatory? Can it empower female spectators? Which bodies can we see naked? How can we use eroticism and sexuality in artistic practices? We will discuss the shame and stigma associated with sexualised bodies and practices. We will talk about the New York night scene and the differences between Europe and America.

Burlesque Act Development 2-day Intensive Workshop

In this two day workshop you will create a burlesque act from seed of an idea to a performance! Peekaboo will teach you how to take your ideas into fruition and find your voice within your performance. Over the course of the two days you will learn some history of burlesque, have a movement class each day and work in groups and alone to craft a solo act. We will also learn how to give constructive positive feedback to your peers to help eachother grow their craft. The end of the workshop is a full show in the studio for each other!
