Opening: 4.9.2022

On the one hand, the piece by Neja Zorzut is positioned in the tradition of exploring the painting medium, which has, since minimalism, been marked by a rejection of (self)limiting to opticity and, through this, an elimination of clear borders between painting and sculpture. On the other hand, Zorzut tackles adaptation, demise, and violence. This positions her in the research of immanent ecology art, affirming materiality, and attempts of escaping anthropocentric starting points, which are typical for a part of young artistic production in the country.

For the c000ontainers: objectness, ecology, and abstraction art intervention and lecture cycle, Zorzut designed a space installation titled Ebb, which designates the tide moving back into the sea, decrease, or demise, but also a type of receding that never really succeeds to move away. In a strict sense, the object of the container as the centre of the cycle thereby stands neither as a presentation space nor as a starting point for the content, but mainly as an equivalent element in the project’s whole.

The installation of the piece will be accompanied by Miroslav Grišek’s text; the opening by Kaja Kraner’s lecture.

Kaja Kraner: Strategies of affirming materiality and the ecological aspects of new art production • lecture

From the standpoint of nature philosophy, the lecture will contextualise the research area of adapting and the relationships between organism and the environment. It will attempt to shed light on the ways in which Zorzut tries to avoid the classic anthropometric use of visual means and the reduction of materiality to (optical) form. This makes her work part of “ecology without nature”.
