Živa Božičnik Rebec’s project is situated on the reference field of researching what an ontological object has/can have, ontogenesis, and the relationship of objects to their environment/exterior. It is composed of three objects installed in the environment of a container. The starting point of the first object is one of the most wide-spread infrastructure design products, whose standardisation and omnipresence makes it almost invisible. The second object is based on the emblem of a trademark, whose virality and hype make it into a cultural object. The third object is a web-based virtual object, an “instafilter”, a means of augmenting reality, which is further augmented through attributing an “out-of-screen” body. Through various transformations – melting and freezing – designer products, Božičnik Rebec produces a hybrid environment that obscures their ontological status and time origins – up to the point that it becomes unclear if we are witnessing a pre-cultural era influenced by a random material growth of prototypes of tools and symbols or if this is a post-apocalyptical contaminated environment in which objects dissolve and are colonised by organic matter.

Kaja Kraner: Ontological Egalitarianism in Contemporary Visual Arts • lecture

On the one hand, the lecture will contextualise the piece by Božičnik Rebec with the focus of the c000ntainers art project and lecture cycle, which deals with the connection between infrastructure, design, and activity; on the other, it contextualises the wider research field, especially of the younger generation of visual artists, which can be positioned close to the ontological turn in humanities or to the position of ontological egalitarianism. In the last part of the lecture, the piece Full-filter Ghostriders, which was done for the cycle, co-positioned with the previous work by Božičnik Rebec. The lecture will follow the idea that this is a research of objectness in the field of analysing the truth of extinction, whereby the attention is directed from social/cultural mediation of objects (which is often represented in contemporary art) to affirming the autonomy of objectness, materiality, and the relationship between objects and environment.
