Parquet Ball

Performance
Project by Mateja Bučar
Coproduction: DUM – društvo umetnikov, Zavod Maska
Premiere: 09.09.2020

In a large and empty ballroom space, a parquet ball is performing a choreography created especially for it.

A Parquet Ball is a term meaning “elegant dancing over a parquet of the dance hall”, but it can also mean an object (a ball) made out of parquet. In the 19th and 20th centuries, this dance evolved into its highest forms and functions. Halls and venues have often matched in quality, smoothness, shapes, and gloss of their parquet floors, just as couples did in the notions of elegancy, movement, and their presentation in general.

Parquet Ball is a contemporary dance piece choreographed 20 years ago as part of the celebrations for the 100th issue of Maska with the purpose of producing it at the commemoration of the 200th issue and the hundredth anniversary of the magazine’s first issue.

“Človek začne razmišljati malo utopično, kaj bo naredil čez 14, 20 let,” je dejala koreografinja. Dodala je: “Tok misli me je pripeljal do parketnega plesa, po angleško parquet ball, ta dobesednost pa me je nato pripeljala do ideje žoge iz parketa.”
